I Am Legend – Movie Review

Robert Neville (Will SMITH) is the only survivor after a deadly virus wipes out the world”s population in 2009 (nearly three years earlier}. He trawls the streets of New York city with only his Alsatian dog for company searching mainly in vain for anyone else left alive. He encounters pretty desolate scenes with nature slowly claiming back New York”s dusty and resolute streets. Wild animals were running everywhere which had presumptively escaped from former zoos but these didn”t pose any real danger. There was something else much more sinister lurking within, I won”t go into detail here but it involves strange creatures which come out after dusk.

Back at his house, which he had turned into a bolthole. He has everything that he needs to survive including generators. Who could imagine any character that Will Smith plays without the electricity to play his favorite music — in this case Bob Marley. After sending a radio alert to anyone who may be listening, He meets a young immigrant woman with her son but they have little in common.

This would be a problem in a post-apocalyptic world where you would be lucky to find anyone alive yet alone someone who shared your taste in music  Neville had been some kind of scientist or doctor in the old world so he desperately tries to find a cure for the virus in his hi tech basement. There, he keeps a whole menagerie of smaller infected animals in reinforced glass cages to help him in this quest.  After managing to capture one of the larger creatures, which he quickly discovers is actually human but has been transformed by the virus. He has a race against time not only to find a cure but also for his very own survival.

Overall a gripping film with Neville (WILL SMITH) charging down the streets in various vehicles but mainly a four-wheel drive truck and armed to the teeth. The film features great C.G.I. effects showing the decaying city but it felt a bit too desolate at times with too few uninfected human characters featured, apart from Neville”s old world (2009) flashbacks which show New York city in a state of emergency after the virus first struck.

A must see film if you like post civilization stuff.
