Jurassic World (2015)

Jurassic World resurrects the classic Jurassic Park film series and brings it back to relevancy. It takes place more than two decades after the events of the first film. Jurassic World, having been renamed presumably because of the infamy associated with the previous name, is now a fully active dinosaur amusement park. But attendance has been declining and the park owner is searching for a way to boost it back up. So InGen introduces a new type of dinosaur, a hybrid. Indominus Rex, as they call it, is a genetically-modified T-Rex mixed with other predatory dinosaurs. It is bigger and more intelligent than any of the previous species. However, it breaks out of its containment area and proceeds to wreak havoc on the park and its visitors.

Going into this film, my expectations were pretty high despite the unsatisfactory storylines of Lost World and JP3. It took a long time to get this movie to theaters due to differing opinions on where next to go with the story, or if they wanted to continue it at all. Due to that length of time, I was expecting a very well-done film and that I did receive. What it lacks in inventiveness, it more than makes up for in story development and intense action sequences. Jurassic World will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

Many devoted Jurassic Park fans will appreciate the referral to the events of the original film. In one particular scene, some of the main characters discover the old visitor center, now overgrown with brush. Another scene portrays a character wearing an old Jurassic Park T-shirt he bought, much to the chagrin of his co-workers. As I said earlier, what happened in Jurassic Park 22 years ago may have been the inspiration for the change from “Jurassic Park” to “Jurassic World”.

Of course, you have the shallow critics who would pan this sequel as “unoriginal” or essentially a rehash of previous events. While that may be true to a point, the numbers speak for themselves, people! As of the publishing of this article, Jurassic World has made $981.3 million, not mention shattering numerous opening weekend box office records.

Whether this movie is worth two hours of your time, I’ll leave that to you. But, in my opinion, it was two hours of my time very well-spent!
