Remaking a good old movie is big gamble. People will have a point of comparison. More often than not, like loyalty, people like the original better and always have something bad to say about the remake.
Carrie (2013) is the classic drama-horror story about a teenage girl named Carrie White (Chloe Moretz) who is raised by an overly religious and almost crazy mother (Julianne Moore), an outcast in school, who discovers her telekinetic powers. Carrie tries to learn more about it. She eventually develops her powers and become stronger. Carrie only wants to be normal and be like any other teenage girl in school. Due to consistent bullying of her classmates, she will be forced to use it and causes terror in their town when pushed too far by her classmates on prom night.
Based on Stephen Kings novel, Carrie (2013), directed by Kimberly Peirce, is a remake of the same-titled movie in 1976.
The original movie made a big bang in the 70’s. It sure scared the hell out of people back then. The remake tries to relive the horror.
The original film received two Academy Award nominations, one for Sissy Spacek in the title role and one for Piper Laurie as her abusive mother. The film featured numerous young actors – including Nancy Allen, William Katt, Amy Irving and John Travolta – whose careers were launched, or escalated, by the film. If you have seen the old Carrie, you will probably think that it is better than the new one. The acting was better. Sissy’s big, round, sad eyes made the role of a shy, diffident teenager who is the butt of practical jokes at her small-town high school more convincing than the cute and pretty-looking Moretz. Moretz’s acting was good. Sissy’s was better. What is better in the new Carrie is the visual effects. The movie was able to show more believable telekinesis powers and they were all more believable than the old one. The movie deserves 3 stars (5 the highest.)
The new Carrie must be rated PG. From the opening of the movie it showed a little more blood than the old one. The film showed bullying and violence. There were a lot of blood and gore too. Parental guidance is advised.
