1. King Kong
Merian C Cooper as well as Ernest B Schoedsack directed the King Kong film in 1933. The plot is about a group of hunters who discover a giant ape on an island inhabited by tribal people. They capture the ape and bring it to America and they put the animal for an exhibition.
But nothing could match the might of the King Kong as it escapes and destroys the city. The film has sequels but the first film remains one of the most popular films even today.
2. Devil in Human form – The Omen
To this date, the film “The Omen” remains the most successful series. According to the first part, Satan is born as a child on earth similar to God’s son Jesus. The first one in the series had the author David Seltzer penning the story while the series was written by various writers.
3. Gone With The Wind
Victor Fleming directed the novel ‘Gone with the Wind’ (author – Margaret Mitchell) in to a film. The film was released in 1939, its duration is 210 minutes, but the movie had many beautiful scenes and it had ten Oscar awards in its kitty.
4. Seven Samurai
Directed by the “Godfather” of cinema, Akira Kurosawa, it was released in 1959, and period was 16th century. It tells the story of seven persons (among them samurai) who come together to defend a village from bandits. The climax is breathtaking and the film is regarded as a cult classic.
5. Psycho
Directed by the famous director Alfred Hitchcock, the movie had a murder scene which had the viewers gasping for breath. It was released in 1960 and is regarded as one of the famous thrillers.
6. Lawrence of Arabia
David Lean directed the film which featured Peter O’ Toole in the main role. The era was that of World War I and it was a smash hit at the box office. It also earned Seven Academy awards.
7. The Good, the Bad and The Ugly
Considered as a classic, this film was released in 1966 and directed by Sergio Leone. Clint Eastwood got one of his most famous roles in the film. The film had a tight script, excellent performances and a gripping climax.
8. The Godfather
This film came to the screens in 1972 and was directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The film was based on Mario Puzo’s novel and Marlon Brando brings to life the life of a Mafia Don. The film revolves around the treachery, loyalty and killings in the gangster world.
9. Enter the Dragon
Till this film hit the screens in 1973, there were actions sequences and action stars. But after this film Bruce Lee became a legend. The film had brilliant action sequences and is considered a benchmark in Hong Kong cinema because it brought action movies to an international audience.
10. Jaws
This film became a mass hit because it captured the audiences’ pulse – fear. The story was taken from Peter Benchley’s novel and Steven Spielberg’s name became famous all over the world. The story was of a great white shark which terrorizes a coastal resort.
11. Raiders of the Lost Ark
Again we have to know of Steven Spielberg who directed this film. The audiences loved the film when it came to screens in 1981 and the hero was Harrison Ford who played the title role of Indiana Jones, an archaeologist and explorer. The hero has company in the form of giant spiders to human villains. Anyone with penchant for history, ancient civilization will love this film.
12. The Last Emperor
This film by Bernado Bertolucci was released in 1987 and won Nine Academy awards. It tells the life and turmoil of the Last Emperor of China from the years 1908 – 1967. The film was stunning with beautiful locales and settings which many a cinema goer would love to view.
13. Die Hard
The first movie came in 1998. The director was John Mctiernan, and the plot tells about the cop, John McClane – the title role was played by Bruce Willis. Sequels were also made, but the first and second series is a visual treat for all fans.
14. The Lord Of the Rings
The Middle Earth trilogy by R R Tolkien and brought to cinema by Peter Jackson, have their own aura of mystery, mythical monsters, and remains popular to this day.
15. City Of God
The Brazilian movie, was released in 2002, and the director was Fernando Meirelles & Katia Lund. The time period is the slums of Rio de Janeiro from 1960 to the year 1980. The film script is a violent one which shows even children indulging in robbery and murder.
16. Inception
Till the film was released, the script of any movie usually revolved around events that were seen in a dream. In this movie, directed by Christopher Nolan, Leonardo di Caprio had the power to enter into the subconscious minds of individuals and steal their ideas.
17. Gandhi
The film won many awards as well as critical acclaim. Directed by Richard Attenborough, the script tells of a young person practicing law in South Africa and becoming a national icon in India and frees the country from colonial rule by the power of non-violence. The film came to the screens in 1982 and is considered one of the finest biographies ever made. Ben Kingsley played the title role to perfection.
18. The Kid
Not one to be missed by persons who like comedy, the film released in 1921 was directed by Charles Chaplin. He also had a befitting role as a person who takes care of the orphan kid played by Jackie Coogan. The film is a laugh riot.
