Nim’s Island Review:
Nim’s Island revolves around Nim Rusoe (Abigail Braslin), a girl living with her father, Jack (Gerard butlet), an adventurer in an inhabited island.
Perhaps it’s from the genes, Nim has a liking on adventurous novels, especially for the stories of Alex Rover, a fictional novel character created by Alexandra (Julie Foster).
One day Jack set off for another adventure of his and was lost at sea, Nim pleaded Alexander to rescue her from the island, in which they encountered into each other coincidentally, while keeping in touch with e-mails. However, Alexandra had not been stepping out of house since four months ago, as she was busy on her novel scripts as usual…
A friend calls Foster’s performance “a rare comedic turn”. Given her knack of choosing strong, feisty characters in films like Panic Room (2002) and Flightplan (2005), it’s easy to forget that she was once a host of TV improvisational comedy Saturday Night Live.
She pulls off the physical humour so effortlessly in Nim’s Island that it’s surprising that producers don’t approach her more often for comedies.
However, the female to watch out for is really young Breslin, who nails her Bindi the Jungle Girl-like character along with a wide range of emotions. As if being avle to converse with a sea lion and a lizard is not amazing enough, she is also handy with tools – so good that she will put McGyver to shame – when she defends her island against rowdy cruise tourists.
At times, you might cringe at the childish dialogue – “Nim’s Island”, after all, is a film for kids but there are treasures in this island to entertain everyone in the family!
